    Beyond the ABCs: Higher Education and Developing Countries

    This paper analyzes a relatively neglected facet of the complex debate regarding human capital – higher (or tertiary) education. It addresses five broad questions examining higher education in developing countries. One, are the economic effects of higher education on developing countries different from those in industrialized countries, with its links with labor markets of lesser importance than its impact on institutional development? Two, how does the impact of higher education depend on the type of education and its beneficiaries? Three, with the state unable to meet growing demand pressures, what should be the proper role of the state to ensure not just quality but also equity and access? Four, how should countries rethink the provision of higher education in an “open economy” from seeking education abroad or encouraging foreign providers into the country or simply linking domestic institutions with foreign quality assurance mechanisms? And five, do new technologies offer developing countries a new paradigm to expand the provision of high quality but low cost higher education? The aim is not to provide categorical answers to these complex questions, but rather highlight the analytical and empirical lacuna with regard to each of these questions.higher education, human capital

    In an attempt to increase writing center attendance and overall retention, a social media strategywas put into place in the Spring 2019 semester at Edward Waters College, an HBCU inJacksonville, FL, and continued through the summer. In this case study, the choice of socialmedia platforms is considered, including what platforms the Writing Center’s target audienceuses. The use of aggregators for scheduling is also assessed, with an eye to efficacy and economyof time and funding. Finally, the use of social media analytics is discussed to determine the beststrategy for analyzing interactions with followers and other users

    Predicting Job Adaptability: A Facet-Level Examination of the Relationship Between Conscientiousness and Adaptive Performance with Autonomy as a Moderator

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Change has become a prevalent feature of today’s organizations, resulting in an increased demand for workers who are able to adapt to the dynamic nature of the environment. Recently, many have suggested that traditional models of job performance should be expanded to include an adaptive performance dimension. Research in this relatively new domain has focused on defining adaptive performance and understanding how it may be predicted. This study contributes to these efforts by testing the personality trait of conscientiousness as a predictor of adaptive performance, with both constructs being studied at their domain and facet levels. The incremental validity of conscientiousness over cognitive ability is also examined, and autonomy is investigated as a moderator of the conscientiousness-adaptive performance relationships. A sample of 212 undergraduate students who work at least 20 hours per week participated in the study by completing an online survey and a cognitive ability assessment. Conscientiousness was supported as a good predictor of adaptive performance overall. However, the predictor-outcome results did vary over the domain and facet levels, emphasizing the importance of studying both levels. At the two-facet level of conscientiousness, the achievement motivation facet was shown to have stronger relationships with the adaptive performance dimensions compared to the dependability facet. At the six-facet level of conscientiousness, the three achievement motivation facets and one dependability facet (i.e., dutifulness) were significantly related to all eight performance dimensions, but the other two dependability facets (i.e., orderliness and cautiousness) were not significantly related to all of the adaptive performance dimensions. Conscientiousness did provide significant incremental validity over cognitive ability at the domain level and for almost all of the facet-level relationships, but cognitive ability was not related to adaptive performance or any other study variables. Autonomy was supported as a moderator with 16 significant interactions uncovered at the facet level. However, these significant interactions only involved three (i.e., interpersonal, learning, and cultural) of the eight adaptive performance dimensions. Overall, these results supported the conscientiousness-adaptive performance relationship and contributed new findings to the adaptive performance domain that have implications for employee selection and performance management

    Delayed Diagnosis of Atypical Presentation of Myasthenia Gravis

    Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the neuromuscular junction, resulting in muscle fatiguability and weakness. The pathological characteristics of the disorder include ocular weakness resulting in diplopia and/or ptosis. More generally, the disease can result in fluctuant weakness of skeletal muscle, predominantly affecting ocular, bulbar and respiratory muscles. Autoimmunity in this instance is mediated by IgG anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies that results in an impaired structure of postsynaptic neurotransmission. Approximately 15% of patients with myasthenia gravis present with bulbar symptoms, of which isolated bulbar symptoms are seen only on occasion. As with our patient, this presentation is most commonly seen in men with late-onset myasthenia gravis. We present a case of an 83-year-old male who presented with a 1 year history of dysphagia for solids and fatigable dysarthria. Following a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, he was initiated on corticosteroid treatment. He later descended into myasthenic crisis, requiring invasive ventilation measures due to a failure of both non-invasive ventilation and intravenous immunoglobulin G (IVIG) to achieve therapeutic goals

    Malaria parasites produce volatile mosquito attractants

    UnlabelledThe malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum contains a nonphotosynthetic plastid organelle that possesses plant-like metabolic pathways. Plants use the plastidial isoprenoid biosynthesis pathway to produce volatile odorants, known as terpenes. In this work, we describe the volatile chemical profile of cultured malaria parasites. Among the identified compounds are several plant-like terpenes and terpene derivatives, including known mosquito attractants. We establish the molecular identity of the odorant receptors of the malaria mosquito vector Anopheles gambiae, which responds to these compounds. The malaria parasite produces volatile signals that are recognized by mosquitoes and may thereby mediate host attraction and facilitate transmission.ImportanceMalaria is a key global health concern. Mosquitoes that transmit malaria are more attracted to malaria parasite-infected mammalian hosts.     Therapeutic Monoclonal Antibodies to Prevent Tuberculosis Infection

    Mycobacteria tuberculosis (Mtb) is a major cause of human morbidity and mortality. Transmission occurs through inhalation of aerosolized Mtb and the initial infection is believed to occur primarily in the alveolar macrophage, although Mtb can infect other cells residing in the lung including dendritic cells, pneumocytes and M cells. Several molecules derived from Mtb are involved in the attachment of the organism to host receptors (opsonic and non-opsonic), which have been reasonably well elucidated. However, a complete understanding of how Mtb attaches to the host and the relative importance of each mechanism on the outcome of infection remains elusive. We hypothesize that protection from infection is possible by blocking the critical initial surface interactions of the organism with the host cell using specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). To develop effective mAbs, the outermost layers of Mtb, the capsule and outer membrane, were isolated and characterized by protein gel and LC/MS/MS. Approximately 1000 different proteins were identified in the isolations, of which ~25% were unique to one of the two fractions. The capsule or outer membrane preparations were used as antigens to immunize CD1 mice for up to 12 weeks to generate antibodies via traditional hybridoma generation. Antibodies were screened, selected and characterized by their ability to bind whole cell Mtb by ELISA, demonstration of unique heavy chain variable region sequence and binding specificity by Western Blot. Of approximately 1500 screened hybridomas, 30 lead mAbs have been isolated with specificity to various targets. Preliminary results suggest several of the lead mAb candidates are able to prevent Mtb-induced macrophage cell death in vitro. Future studies will attempt to confirm efficacy in vivo after aerosolized infection in mice with mAb-coated Mtb or parenteral administration of mAb(s). Targets of functional mAbs will be determined and these antigens could serve as viable candidates for vaccine development

    Sentry bioconvertible inferior vena cava filter: Study of stages of incorporation in an experimental ovine model

    The Sentry inferior vena cava (IVC) filter is designed to provide temporary protection from pulmonary embolism (PE) and then bioconvert to become incorporated in the vessel wall, leaving a patent IVC lumen. Objective. To evaluate the performance and stages of incorporation of the Sentry IVC filter in an ovine model. Methods. Twenty-four bioconvertible devices and 1 control retrievable filter were implanted in the infrarenal IVC of 25 sheep, with extensive daily monitoring and intensive imaging. Vessels and devices were analyzed at early (≤98 days, n = 10) and late (180 ± 30 days, n = 14 study devices, 1 control) termination and necropsy time-points. Results. Deployment success was 100% with all devices confirmed in filtering configuration, there were no filter-related complications, and bioconversion was 100% at termination with vessels widely patent. By 98 days for all early-incorporation analysis animals, the stabilizing cylindrical part of the Sentry frame was incorporated in the vessel wall, and the filter arms were retracted. By 180 days for all late-incorporation analysis animals, the filter arms as well as frames were stably incorporated. Conclusions. Through 180 days, there were no filter-related complications, and the study devices were all bioconverted and stably incorporated, leaving all IVCs patent

    The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Two-Season ACTPol Spectra and Parameters

    We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol). We analyze night-time data collected during 2013-14 using two detector arrays at 149 GHz, from 548 deg2^2 of sky on the celestial equator. We use these spectra, and the spectra measured with the MBAC camera on ACT from 2008-10, in combination with Planck and WMAP data to estimate cosmological parameters from the temperature, polarization, and temperature-polarization cross-correlations. We find the new ACTPol data to be consistent with the LCDM model. The ACTPol temperature-polarization cross-spectrum now provides stronger constraints on multiple parameters than the ACTPol temperature spectrum, including the baryon density, the acoustic peak angular scale, and the derived Hubble constant. Adding the new data to planck temperature data tightens the limits on damping tail parameters, for example reducing the joint uncertainty on the number of neutrino species and the primordial helium fraction by 20%.Comment: 23 pages, 25 figure
